HEXACHLOROETHANE

 

General Description

Hexachloroethane is a white to slightly off-white crystalline non-flammable solid which sublimes on heating.

It has a smell somewhat resembling camphor. Hexachloroethane is virtually insoluble in water, but soluble in most organic solvents, such as trichloroethylene and other chlorinated hydrocarbons, ethyl alcohol, ethyl ether, benzene etc. Although generally an inert material, hexachloroethane is decomposed by red heat to perchloroethylene and chlorine. It does not react with dilute aqueous alkali or acids but is decomposed by hot strong alkali.

It reacts with finely divided metals such as calcium, magnesium, aluminium or zinc if a primer such as a nitrate is used. This fact is utilized in smoke screen preparations. A large number of light alloys based on aluminium and magnesium absorb hydrogen when molten. Castings containing occluded gas are naturally weak. It is the practice therefore in the aluminium industry to degas the molten metal either by bubbling chlorine through the melt or by the introduction of hexachloroethane. In the latter case, chloride is evolved by partial decomposition of the hexachloroethane at the temperature involved. The hexachloroethane can be introduced in pellet form in a specially designed holder or plunger.

Hexachloroethane is an important component of smoke candles or grenades used for producing screening clouds or smokers. A mixture hexachloroethane with powdered metal once started, undergoes vigorous reaction. Other materials are usually added to ignite the mixture and to modify the character of the resultant smoke.

HMFLUX 11 (Cleaning & Drossing Flux)

 

General Description

Flux prevent oxidation losses of aluminium during melting. Thus improving the yield of molten metal from the charge Drossing-off flux absorb oxides and non-metallic inclusions. It reduces the incidence of inclusions in the castings and also reduces the loss of metal through the dross Modifying fluxes improve the mechanical properties of aluminium – silicon alloys by refining eutectic microstructure. Furnace cleaning flux retains the melting capacity and efficiency of the furnace while improving the life of the refractory lining.

HMFLUX 11 is supplied in 50 kg poly lined HDPE Woven bags.

It should be stored in a cool and dry place. The bags should never be kept open as moisture – pick up from the atmosphere may affect the performance of the product.

General Description

HMFLUX-5 is extremely effective exothermic powder which gives metal free dross.

Proper use of HMFLUX-5 reduces metal loss in aluminium and it’s alloys. It is mainly used as a dross refining agent.

Application

This flux forms a protective layer over the liquid metal which reduces oxidation of melt and further hydrogen pick up. HMFLUX – 5 is recommended for melting and covering operation. Exo-thermic property of the product influences faster melting of aluminium.

HMFLUX – 5 forms a layer over molten aluminium which acts as a barrier between molten aluminium and atmosphere and thus prevents the oxidation of molten aluminium.

HMFLUX 36A (Modifier Flux)

 

General Description

HMFLUX-36A is a modifying flux used in aluminium alloys having Silicon content 7 – 13%.

HMFLUX -36A is a modifying flux consisting sodium salts.

The purpose of modifying eutectic Al-Si alloy is to change the acicular form of silicon to a spherical or globular form.

The modified metallurgical structure and improved distribution of silicon phase gives better machineability and improved surface texture.

Application

Prepare the desired alloy composition, follow the normal fluxing and cleansing procedure recommended for using suitable flux from CERAFLUX-11.

Degas the melt with a suitable grade of D’GASSER and dross off using small quantity of a suitable flux from CERAFLUX-11.

After degassing operation, add TIBON-5/5E as per requirement.
After grain refinement, add precalculated quantity of CERAFLUX-36 depending on the melt size.

Hold the metal until all the salt is melted over the surface.
Wait for minimum 10 minutes for modification effect to take place.

Rabble it to ensure homogeneity of the composition, then add small quantity of CERAFLUX-11. Skim cleanly and pour without delay.

HM-REFINE FLUX 100 (Cleaning Degassing Flux)

 

A range of chemical degassing and degassing cum grain refining agents for aluminum and its alloys.

General Description

DEGASER products are compacted tablets in different sizes to facilitate treatment of various melt sizes. They are plunged into aluminum melts for degassing.

Even under the best melting conditions, it is often impossible to prevent hydrogen gas from entering the melt which finally gives rise to porosity in the cast products. It is, therefore, necessary to remove as much of hydrogen from the melt as possible prior to pouring.

DEGASER range of products removes the dissolved hydrogen by the diffusion process. Degassing with these products is superior to flushing with chlorine gas which is associated with problems of space, equipment, corrosion, health hazards, etc. Some of the degassing products contain grain refining elements also and these products function as combined degassing and grain refining agents.

Application

Application rate ranges from 0.15 to 0.3% depending on the melt charge.

Plunge the recommended quantity as per the application guide to the bottom of the melt using a preheated cylindrical or rectangular basket type plunger when the temperature is falling. The degassing should be continued until the bubbling ceases.

Coat the plunger with a refractory coating to prevent iron pick up. Dry the plunger completely before use.

Remove the wrapper before the DEGASER tablets are plunged, otherwise metal may pick up hydrogen from the decomposition products of the wrapper. Do not expose DEGASER tablets to atmosphere as far as possible as moisture pick up would result.

As a gentle rolling action creates more efficient degassing than a turbulent action, apply DEGASER tablets in two or more successive operations rather than in a single operation.

In case of Al-Si Hypoeutectic and eutectic alloys, degas before modification treatment. This helps in securing a constant degree of modification by destroying any existing modification and then remodifying to a known and desired extent.

In case of AI-Si hypereutic alloys, degas before and after grain refining treatment. This helps in knocking off sodium present in the melt before grain refinement and in getting better dispersion of the primary silicon particles after grain reinement.
